Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
